What is Homemaker and Home Health Aide Care?

A Homemaker and Home Health Aide is a trained professional who assists Veterans with daily activities in their homes. While they are not nurses, they are supervised by a registered nurse who assesses the Veteran’s needs and ensures quality care.

In Home Personal Services is an approved community provider with the VA to provide in-home care as an alternative to nursing home placement. This service also offers Respite Care for Veterans and their family caregivers, helping them live comfortably and independently at home at no cost to them.

 

What Services Are Available?

Your services will be based on your individual needs, as determined by a VA social worker. Assistance can range from occasional support to multiple visits per week, depending on your situation, and all paid by the VA.

Examples of assistance with daily activities include:

    • Meal preparation & cooking
    • Safely moving around the home
    • Assistance with getting dressed
    • Personal grooming
    • Bathing & using the bathroom
    • Grocery shopping & basic errands

You may continue receiving these services for as long as you need help with daily tasks.

    • Talking with your VA social worker or care team about available services

Did you know?
– Veterans with a disability caused by or aggravated during active military service may be eligible for tax-free monthly benefits.
– Benefits and support services may also be available to spouses of eligible veterans.

 

Are You Eligible for No Cost Care?

All enrolled Veterans may qualify for this service if they are eligible for VA community care, meet the clinical criteria, and if services are available in their area. (Availability may vary by location.) 

Before applying, make sure you meet the eligibility requirements for VA health care (VA Form 10-10EZ).

You may be eligible if all the following apply:

    1. You served in the active military, naval, or air service (including National Guard or Reserve activation by federal order).
    2. You did not receive a dishonorable discharge.
    3. You meet at least one of these service requirements:
          • Served at least 24 consecutive months or for your full active-duty period.
          • Discharged for a service-connected disability.
          • Discharged for hardship or “early out”.
          • Served before September 7, 1980.
