In Home Personal Services is a caregiving company that is here to provide care for seniors, veterans and those with disabilities. Our work environment is one in which we take pride in the care and welfare of our employees, both in the field and at our offices.
To explore the work culture within our company we interviewed some of our employees, and over the next several weeks our blog will be focused on what it is like to work at IHPS and what a typical day can look like for various positions.
Today we will be talking to Iris Santiago (OTR, PHR), the Agency Manager of IHPS, about her thoughts on the work culture that IHPS creates and how it helps her and those on her team.
Being at IHPS for nearly ten years, Iris has seen the company grow from less than 100 people to over 300 staff members. “The reason why we grew,” Iris believes, “is the character of the company. IHPS has always looked after the client and the family, as well as our staff, to ensure that the standard of care is there.”
Care. It is a cornerstone of the industry and a value that IHPS takes seriously – helping seniors maintain their independence through offering top notch care. Iris suggests that there is another dimension to care: the compassion that is behind it. “IHPS always has that compassion to care for their clients, the family of the clients, and the staff that we have.” It can be easy to provide care for someone without having compassion. That care then becomes a shell; it is doing all the right things but not involving your heart, and the results are clients and employees who are physically healing but emotionally ailing.
IHPS takes the next step to ensure that our clients are receiving optimum care. The Illinois Department of Health (IDPH) requires 8 hours of training, and IHPS offers 16 + hours for our caregivers, as well as seminars, conventions and continuing education.
Beyond that, IHPS offers a supportive environment for employees. Iris feels that a unique aspect of IHPS is that it, “has a family feel to it. Through ups and downs, each of our team members and leaders work together to make sure that our clients are taken care of. We all share the same passion of making sure that clients are well taken care of which motivates each one of us to do our job…bring[ing] us to excellence in all that we do.”
If you or anyone you know has been a caregiver then you may well understand compassion fatigue. A basic definition of compassion fatigue is when physical and/or emotional distress occurs from helping those in need. This can occur often in the caregiving industry because of the nature of what we do. How then, does IHPS help their employees when dealing with this type and other types of emotional/physical stress?
“I always let them feel that they are not alone,” Iris emphasized. It is important to recognize that there is help all around and within reach; having the company you work for be supportive of that helps make stressful times not as trying.
“IHPS has a good support system. Each [person] has their own main duties and responsibilities but all wear multiple hats so that when needed they can step in.” IHPS is not only here for our clients, but we are also here for our employees, creating relational and workable environments for everyone involved.
