As you age, your energy levels start to decline. It’s difficult for seniors to feel energized and motivated to go through their daily tasks. Sometimes this even impacts relationships with their friends and family. A lack of energy can make seniors feel distant from their loved ones.

Fortunately, seniors aren’t out of luck. There are many simple things they can do to boost their energy levels.

Exercise

Seniors can increase their energy by getting involved in low-impact exercises. Seniors don’t need to do extreme cardio in order to feel better. They can do simple movements that slowly increase their heart rate and energy levels.

Walking is a great exercise for seniors. If they have limited mobility, they can take a slow walk around a neighborhood or just down the street. Walking outside, when the weather is right, can help seniors get some much needed fresh air.

Other workouts can include hiking, dancing, and yoga. It all depends on the individual’s abilities and strength.

For seniors who are capable of doing a bit more, consider strength training. With the help of a trainer or loved one, seniors can participate in low-impact weight lifting and other strength training activities.

Seniors should only do workouts based on their capabilities and physical strength.

Diet Change

Food impacts your energy in positive and negative ways. Maintaining a healthy, balanced diet can help to increase a senior’s energy.

Fruits and vegetables should both be staples of a senior’s diet. They provide key nutrients and are great sources of fiber. Bright colored vegetables and deep-colored fruits contain the most nutrients. Be sure to eat more broccoli, carrots, melon, and berries.

Eating more whole grains instead of refined grains (such as white flours), can give seniors more nutrients. Whole grain can lower your risk for chronic diseases, support weight control, and ultimately stabilize energy levels.

Staying hydrated is a crucial part of energy levels and activity levels. Dehydration can make you feel sluggish and tired.  Seniors should be drinking plenty of water throughout the day.
